Forest-Raised Pork

In the summer months, our heritage hogs are rotated through our pine forests where they are foraging, aerating and fertilizing the soil. They are regularly fed alfalfa hay, as well as a USDA Organic, non-GMO feed, that is corn free and soy free. They are also fed donated produce from a large, well-known wholesale warehouse – which helps to eliminate food waste while providing beneficial nutrition to the hogs. Most of the produce is organic, and all of it is high quality, originally intended for human consumption. No antibiotics, no hormones, no pharmaceuticals of any kind have been used on these hogs. For more information, read our blog post on our Forest-Raised Pork and why we chose Heritage Hog Breeds.

Mobile Processing

We are excited to work with Elevation Meat Market mobile processor in Westcliffe, CO to dispatch and butcher our hogs. Why is mobile processing important to us? Studies have shown that animals in stress when being transported to a butcher, and faced with a strange new space, release stress hormones adrenaline, cortisol and other steroids. This affects us when we consume the meat of animals who were stressed out when harvested. These stress hormones may cause reproductive issues and other bodily issues as we consume it. (Check out this article by The Atlantic). By using a professional mobile processor who dispatch on site at our farm, we ensure the least amount of stress for our animals up to the point of their last breath.
